Xbox is testing a way to have it both ways. Its new Disc-to-Digital program will let players insert an eligible disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X, claim a digital entitlement and then play the game without inserting the disc again.
The rollout starts with Xbox Insiders on 31 August 2026, with thousands of Xbox One and Xbox Series X games supported at launch. A wider release is planned for the coming months.
How it works
Insert the eligible disc, claim the digital entitlement and play. Once activated, the game can be played digitally without the disc being inserted.
Eligible titles can also support Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where available, allowing supported games to be accessed across Xbox consoles, PC and compatible cloud devices.
The important part is that you keep the physical disc. You can continue to lend or sell it, and the digital entitlement can follow the disc to its next owner.
That makes the feature particularly interesting for players who still buy physical games but want the convenience of digital access.
The catch
Not every disc qualifies.
Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs are excluded at launch, while some older Xbox One discs may also be unsupported. Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games are expected to qualify, but publishers ultimately control which titles participate.
Why Xbox is doing this now
The announcement comes as the future of physical media becomes less certain across the console industry.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has said players still value physical media, but Microsoft has not confirmed whether its next-generation Project Helix console will include a disc drive. Speaking to the BBC, Sharma said future hardware needs to balance player choice with affordability, efficiency and performance.
Xbox's next-generation head Jason Ronald has also described the initiative as a way to keep players' libraries accessible as hardware and distribution models change.
For players with large physical collections, the program offers a middle ground: they can keep their discs while gaining the convenience of digital access on supported games.
The program will begin testing with Xbox Insiders on 31 August, with a broader rollout expected in the coming months.
